Responsibilities

Novolex is seeking an employment attorney with 8+ years of experience for the position of Assistant General Counsel, Labor & Employment.  This position reports to the Deputy General Counsel, Labor & Employment, and is responsible for advising Human Resources and business leaders on employment law issues, ensuring compliance with federal, state, and local employment laws, and representing the organization in employment-related litigation and administrative proceedings. This is a hybrid role based in either Charlotte, NC; Lake Forest, IL; or Covington, KY.

 

Responsibilities:

  • Provide timely and pragmatic advice to management and Human Resources on a wide array of employment law issues, including hiring, leaves of absence and accommodations, performance management, discipline, terminations, discrimination/harassment, job eliminations and reductions in force, employee benefits, wage and hour issues, worker classifications, and other employee relations matters.
  • Work closely with Human Resources and business leaders to support the execution of business strategy in a practical and compliant manner.
  • Draft clear, concise, and persuasive position statements and other written submissions in response to administrative charges and investigations (EEOC, DOL, NLRB, and similar agencies).
  • Draft, review, and update employment related policies, handbooks, and agreements.
  • Prepare and deliver training to HR professionals, managers, and employees on employment law compliance and best practices.
  • Monitor federal, state, and local legal development in employment and labor law and proactively advise stakeholders of risks and implications.
  • Represent the organization in employment disputes and litigation, including supervising outside counsel, overseeing litigation strategy, and managing legal budgets.
  • Conduct and supervise internal investigations related to employee complaints or compliance matters.
  • Establish and maintain relationships, credibility, and trust with business leaders, HR, members of the Legal Department, and other colleagues.

Qualifications

Qualifications & Skills

 

  • J.D. from an accredited law school; licensed to practice law and member in good standing of a state bar.
  • 8+ years of legal experience focused primarily on employment law, with a combination of law firm and in-house experience. Experience with top tier national labor & employment law firm preferred.
  • Expertise in federal, state, and local employment laws, including multi-state compliance, leaves of absence/accommodations, wage and hour issues, and discrimination/harassment laws. Benefits experience is a plus.
  • Sound and practical business judgment and the ability to provide business-oriented, practical legal advice;
  • Exceptional legal writing skills, with demonstrated experience drafting persuasive responses to administrative agency charges (e.g., EEOC, DOL, NLRB, state agencies).
  • Ability to multi-task and work in a fast paced, changing environment and to balance multiple, concurrent projects;
  • Strong analytical, written, and verbal communication skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to collaborate effectively with cross-functional teams, build relationships, and earn credibility.
  • Experience advising multi-state employers and navigating varying state employment laws is strongly preferred.

 

Novolex is required by law in many locations to include a reasonable estimate of the compensation range for this role. The compensation range takes into account the wide range of factors that are considered in making compensation decisions including but not limited to skill sets; experience and training; licensure and certifications; and other business and organizational needs. At Novolex, it is not typical for an individual to be hired at the top of the range for their role and compensation decisions are dependent on the facts and circumstances of each case. A reasonable estimate of the current base range is $210,000 - $230,000.
