130 miles east of Des Moines, and 230 miles west of Chicago, Cedar Rapids is a city in eastern Iowa. The Cedar Rapids Museum of Art includes many works by native Iowan painter Grant Wood. Brucemore is an estate with acres of gardens and an 1880s mansion, which houses local history displays. Nearby, Bever Park has an ice rink, a pool and farm animals. The National Czech and Slovak Museum and Library offers exhibits on the history and culture of 19th-century immigrants.

 

Pactiv Evergreen Equipment is located in the city of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, with close proximity to Chicago. Initially begun in 1880 to service the dairy industry, EPE now manufactures gable-top carton filling machines, making Evergreen Packaging a fully vertically integrated carton provider for its customers. EPE has 170 team members and now has 1300 installed machines in over 50 countries.

Responsibilities

Responsibilities:

Purpose:

· The person in this position is primarily responsible for design and development of new and existing packaging machines.

· Key customers include the end user, PTVE manufacturing personnel, external vendors used for outsourcing parts, PTVE service technicians, purchasing, engineering and other departments within PTVE.

· Key deliverables include new product design, production support, assistance with assembly and factory testing, field testing, troubleshooting field problems, answering questions for parts manufacturers (whether internal or external) and interfacing with vendors.

· The ultimate goal is the support of existing production models and the development of new packaging machines which will be salable machines, and which in turn will increase paper sales.

 

Key Accountabilities:

· Designs complete sections of new machines, coordinating with engineering team.

· Update and improve existing design to optimize performance, cost and durability.

· Supports internal and external parts manufacturing personnel by answering questions and approving parts as necessary.

· Assists in assembly of new designs by explaining to or showing assembly personnel how new designs should fit together.

· Assists with prototype testing of new products, both purchased components and EPE designed components/systems to determine how they will perform in the EPE application.

· Generate parts books and instruction manuals for design changes and new designs

o The major challenge is to design machines that are more efficient, reliable and cost effective for the direct machine user and produce the most desirable package for the end consumer than our competition. This includes competing effectively in the market share battle between paper and plastic containers. Another challenge is how to effectively integrate new technology into our machines without significantly increased cost.

· The internal environment, including interaction with others, (both inside and outside the company) policies/practices:

o One challenge is to communicate effectively with people at all levels of the organization, from union members to upper management. A second challenge is establishing and maintaining relationships with vendors, especially those that are building parts or machine systems to our specifications. A third challenge is knowing and following ISO procedures related to this position.

· The work itself, i.e., problems, opportunities, change:

o The major challenge is how to balance how to be an “expert” in a specific area, such as package formation, while still being broad based enough to work on any area of the machine. A second challenge is how to handle multiple tasks at the same time.

 

Scope:

· Responsible for engineering test lab organization and process system readiness for challenge tests.

· Responsible for design of machine sections totaling $200,000 on an annual basis.

· Occasionally responsible for directing a design technician on documentation of a new design (creating drawings, bills of material, etc).

· Guide hourly assembly and test personnel during prototype development.

Qualifications

Knowledge and Experience:

 

Requirements:

· B.S. in Engineering (Mechanical Engineering preferred) or A.S. in a mechanical technology with 3-5 years of design experience.

· Excellent written and verbal communication skills

Comments:

· The work is very dynamic, non-repetitive, and unpredictable. Must be willing to travel (sometimes on short notice or over weekends) and be comfortable working with service and customers. Must be able to work effectively and comfortably with all levels of the organization. Must be willing to occasionally work long hours to ensure on-time project completion, including evenings and weekends.
